Using superannuation for dental treatment overseas.

Read this first

Superannuation for dental treatment overseas can sometimes be released early, on compassionate grounds, but only as a last resort once every other way to pay has been considered. The Australian Taxation Office runs the application, and the conditions are set in law. For treatment done overseas, two medical reports must explain why it cannot be done in Australia, and cost saving on its own is not a reason the rules accept. Dental Link does not advise on super. We are not financial advisers, and this is not financial advice. Check the ATO (the Australian Taxation Office) and your super fund first. What Dental Link can supply is the written clinic quote and treatment plan the application asks for.

Why Australians ask about using super for dental work

Major dental work in Australia costs more than most people have in savings. Private health extras cover does not stretch far. Major dental limits are typically about A$500 to A$800 a year, well under the cost of a single crown. Quotes for full mouth work run far past what any extras policy would cover.

All-on-4 is a full arch of fixed teeth on four implants. An arch is one full row of teeth, upper or lower. In Australia, All-on-4 is quoted A$20,000 to A$35,000 per arch, and a single implant A$3,000 to A$7,000. Figures that size are why people ask about super. But the rules treat early release as a last resort, not a first option.

How early release of super for dental treatment works, in general terms

Early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds is an application run by the Australian Taxation Office. The conditions are set in law, so the ATO cannot change them, and your super fund does not set them either. The fund only releases the money once the ATO approves the application. For dental treatment, the rules ask that the treatment is to treat a life-threatening illness, or to ease acute or chronic pain, or acute or chronic mental illness, and that it is not readily available through the public system. Dental treatment needs extra evidence on top.

  1. Consider every other way to pay first. The ATO treats early release as a last resort, after savings, a partner's savings, credit, a loan and the provider's own payment plan have been considered.
  2. Gather the evidence the rules ask for. That is two medical reports, one from a registered specialist and one from a registered medical practitioner or another specialist, plus the full treatment plan and an itemised quote. For treatment overseas, the reports must explain why it cannot be done in Australia.
  3. Ask your super fund. Funds have their own process and timeframes for releasing the money once the ATO approves. Call yours before you apply.
  4. Know the cost of using super. Money taken out now is taxed as a super lump sum and is not there for your retirement. Ask a licensed financial adviser.

We have deliberately not published dollar limits, processing times or eligibility criteria for early release on this page. Those are for the ATO and your fund to state. A figure copied from a third party site can be out of date by the time you read it.

What Dental Link supplies: a written clinic quote

Dental Link supplies the written clinic quote and treatment plan for a super application, from a clinic we match you with. The quote is at the clinic's own price. It lists, item by item, the treatment plan, the materials and the warranty terms. It also lists your appointments for each trip to the clinic. Implant treatment usually takes two trips. That itemised quote and treatment plan are provider documents the application asks for. The application also needs medical reports from registered practitioners, which do not come from Dental Link. Dental Link does not advise on super.

You get two quotes, from two vetted clinics. They usually arrive within hours of your X-rays reaching the clinics. You can take either quote to your fund.

Where to be careful when using super for dental work

  • Anyone charging to "help you access your super". Your fund and the ATO run the process. No shortcut is worth paying for.
  • A clinic that promotes the super route to you before it shows a licence, a lab and a written plan. How you pay and how the clinic is checked are separate questions.
  • Committing to travel before your funding is confirmed. There are no deposits with us, ever. Get the quote first and the money second.
  • Treating any figure on any website, including ours, as the number your fund will release.
  • Assuming a lower price overseas is itself a reason the ATO will accept. It is not. For treatment overseas, the medical reports must say why it cannot be done in Australia.

Other ways people pay for dental treatment

When you have your free call with Dental Link, we ask how you plan to pay for treatment. How you pay changes the timing, not the treatment plan. The common answers are savings, superannuation and finance arranged at home. We do not offer finance. We take no commission on any funding route, and we do not prefer one route over another. We care that your payment timing is realistic, so the clinic dates we hold are dates you can keep.

Questions about paying for dental treatment overseas.

Can I use my superannuation to pay for treatment overseas?

Sometimes, on compassionate grounds, but only as a last resort once other ways to pay have been considered. The ATO runs it, the conditions are set in law, and for treatment overseas two medical reports must say why it cannot be done in Australia. Cost saving alone is not a reason. Dental Link does not advise on super: ask the ATO and your super fund first. What we supply is the written clinic quote and treatment plan the application asks for.

Will Dental Link fill in my super application for me?

No. The super application is between you, your fund and the ATO. Dental Link is not qualified to be in the middle of it. We supply the written clinic quote and answer questions about it.

Do I have to pay anything to get a clinic quote?

No. Dental Link is 100% free for patients. The quote comes at the same price as booking direct, and there are no deposits, ever. If you take the quote to your fund and the answer is no, you owe nothing. In that case, you will not hear from us again.

Does private health insurance cover dental treatment overseas?

Ask your insurer. The answer depends on your policy and on whether the treatment is done overseas. We do not publish claims about what any insurer covers.

Does Dental Link offer payment plans or finance?

No. Dental Link does not offer finance, and we take no commission on any funding route. You pay the clinic directly, in person, for work you have agreed to.
